Exterminating Bed Bugs

Bed bugs can be identified by finding them where they hide as they often leave fecal matter (blood stains), skin molts, and eggs, in addition to find the bugs themselves. They typically hide close to the host so the bed and mattress are some common places to check first. In a large infestation they can also be hiding in cracks and outlets in walls, in furniture, clothing, or just about any other place they can fit their tiny bodies into. The victims of bed bug bites may react very differently ranging from no evidence of bites at all, to large red inflammations, rashes, and even allergic reactions!

The removal of bed bugs is not easy, and few “do it yourselfers” have success eradicating large infestations on their own. The most common types of treatments are using chemical pesticides and Thermal Remediation which uses heat to kill bed bugs. Chemical pesticides have limited effectiveness due to bug resistance, difficulty getting where they hide, and not killing the eggs causing the need for multiple treatments that can span 30 days or more!

Heat treatment is proving to be the most effective treatment as it will kill the adults and the eggs and nymphs all in one treatment! Heat will also get into all hiding places if applied properly, leaving the bedbugs no place to hide. And since bed bugs are attracted to the heat, they often come out of hiding when this treatment is used and the single treatment can be effective in 2 to 6 hours. The thermal remediation equipment is expensive, and should only be used by trained professionals to avoid causing fires and damage to the home and property. When done properly, even large infestations can be eradicated with just one heat treatment and the greenest solution available!

K-9 Detection of Bed Bugs

Professional inspectors will only detect visible signs of bed bugs in a room with an accuracy rate of only about 30%. A Dog’s sense of smell, with 90% accuracy finding activity inside walls, baseboards, even under carpets, a room would have to otherwise be stripped down beyond the bare walls. This helps make your inspection a more thorough and accurate one.

Human Inspection for Bedbugs

Large bedbug infestations may be relatively easy to notice, but due to their small size and ability to hide in small places finding smaller infestations with the naked eye can be difficult! Dogs can be trained to smell bed bugs and discover them hiding in places that are not visible to people. This proves to be invaluable for not only finding the pests, but pinpointing their exact locations which will lead to easier treatments and lower extermination costs!
